Full Istanbul
For this sense map project, we had to visit, in Istanbul, the Eminönü squarefrom Kadir Has University and each group had to observe different elements. In my group, we were 4 persons and our subject was about solid and void. We had to express this subject on the maps with different scales and dimensions.
First of all, we had to begin by two maps in two-dimensions and one is focused on the general view and the other is focused on a zoom of a place, Kible çesme caddesi, that we could choose.

On the map, we show each elements of the subject in different materials and colors. For the fullness of different buildings, we expressed the floors by white photo blocks, one photo block represented one floor. To show better the floors of buildings, we additionally put acetates and colored papers with different colors on photo blocks. For example, the red acetate shows that this building is Universities and they have four floors. The orange colored photo blocks is settlement with four floors. The yellow acetate is settlement with three floors. The yellow paper is settlement with double floors. The yellow acetate is settlement with single floor. And finally, the building in green acetate represents the mosque. It’s very different from the other because Turkey is an Islamic country and there are many mosques. Then, we wanted to demonstrate modern and historic structures because it’s a part of buildings. We placed purple elastics for historic structures and blue elastic for modern structures around buildings and some buildings are the both.
The other elements, expressing the fullness of this place, are the bridges and the subway. We put one white photo blocks on the rectilinear map with the same form of bridge in reality and we painted on with abstract colors like pink and purple to show the function of these elements. To represent sea, we put blue acetates and to show the depth of the Marmara Sea, we put many blue acetates one each other to express the fullness of this place too. Then, we put green acetates to represent the nature. These places are in realistic colors because we wanted our map are clear to understand.
The large road, which is the Ragip Gümüspala caddesi, is represented with a blue wire to separate it from the other paths because this road represents the void of this map. However, the void of this road, there were many different transports above all to the Eminönü square.
Finally, we expressed people with red points and one red point represents oneperson.Like this, we can observe places where there were many people or not. The dirtiness is a part of fullness of this map, because many places were dark, narrow with old structures, this is why we wanted to depict it.
The second two-dimensional map is a zoom view and in this place, Kible çesme caddesi, there are many settlements again with different sizes, nature places, people density and the dirtiness of places. The scale of this map is 1/100.
The first two-dimensional map is a general view and we observed the elements like different settlements with different sizes and years, the nature places, the different transports, the density of people and the dirtiness of the places. For us, all these elements expressed the subject. The scale of this map is 1/1000.

In this place, there were settlements, mosques and trees, which express the solidity and the fullness. The road and the small paths, between buildings and trees, express the void.
To represent the solidity, we demonstrated buildings in different materials and colors. For the settlements, we wanted to demonstrate them in different tons of orange color, more the floors increased more orange colors became darker tons. For the representation of mosque, we used the green acetate to difference it from the other buildings because, as I mentioned before, Turkey is an Islamic country and the mosques are important for people. Nature is painted in green and represents trees and bushes in different size. People are represented with a red point and this point represent 1 person. In this place, there weren’t many people. However, the dirtiness is there and we expressed it with dark blue paintings because this street was narrow and there weren’t many places too.
To express the void in this map, we depicted the road and the paths in brown color acetates.
To make a difference between solid elements and void elements, we elevated buildings to show their fullness and we let the other elements to show the void. Like this, we can see the shadows of buildings painted like the colors of them on the ground. This way showed the fullness of settlements and mosque.
